Frances King School of English was established in 1973 in Central London. Over the next four decades it gained British Council recognition, and became one of London’s most successful, popular and well-known EFL schools. Today Frances King welcomes over 4000 students a year from over 70 countries around the world, and is a member of ARELS, EnglishUK, IALC and a founder member of Quality English.

In the late 90s – the early days of the Internet boom – Frances King’s owner, Chris Pringle saw the potential of the Net for educational purposes, and decided to look around for interesting projects to help Frances King extend its service to its customers. He met Dr Terry Miles, who had spent many years developing a Productive Learning approach, incorporating Productive Access to Language: a methodology that enables the language produced by the student and worked on with the teacher to form a significant part of the learning syllabus and materials, as opposed to more traditional approaches in which the syllabus consists mainly of teacher-input followed by exercises usually derived from externally published sources. Dr Miles and his long-time collaborator, Tim Shirra, soon joined the Frances King family, and with a team of experienced EFL practitioners, set about harnessing Internet technologies to revolutionise language learning through wider use of the Productive Learning approach.

In 2005 the online division of Frances King was firmly established as a unique identity, delivering high-quality courses tailored to the individual learner. These courses offered all the benefits of a personalised one-to-one course, combined with the convenience of distance learning and the technological kudos of an online course.

Then a significant decision was made: FK Teacher, as an affiliated part of the Frances King group, would offer its sophisticated teaching and learning system to teachers and suitable language practitioners around the world, but unlike most learning platforms, would not take a percentage of the teachers’ earnings. Instead, FK Teacher only takes money for the use of the system itself, and only if and when it is used, meaning that FK Teacher does not profit from a teacher or language practitioner’s input, only from the work that FK Teachers’ originators and builders originally put in themselves and the ongoing support that the organisation provides its users.
